6/8の「水曜朝礼」では
高校2年C組副担任の池田先生よりお話がありました。

皆さん、お早うございます。私の顔に見覚えがある生徒さんが多いと思います。なぜかというと、職員室の引き戸を開けると、すぐ真ん前の席に座っているからですよね。皆、私の顔を知っているようですが、実際に指導している高校2年生と3年生以外は一体何の教科を教えているのか分かっていない生徒がいると思います。実は、私は英語を教えています。

ということで、一つ面白い英語のidiom(熟語)をお教えしたいと思います。それは、”ice breaking”というもので、「緊張した場を和ませる」という意味があります。そこで、ここではice breakingを意図して、様々な国の言葉で朝の挨拶「お早うございます」を紹介します。英語はもちろん”Good Morning”、 ドイツ語は”Guten morgen(グーテン　モルゲン)” 、フランス語は”Bonjour(ボンジュール)”、 イタリア語は”Buon Giorno(ブオンジョールノ)またはCiao(チャオ)”、スペイン語は”Buenos dias(ブエノス　ディアス)、中国語は「ザオ・シャン・ハオ」、韓国語は「アンニョンハセヨ」、ロシア語は「ドブラェ　ウトラ」、ヒンディー語は”Namaste(ナマステー)”、アラビア語は”sabahlkher（サバー・フル・ハイル）”です。何かの機会にこういった表現を耳にした人がいるかもしれませんね。

先月は、塚川先生が数学に関する興味深いお話をして下さったので、本日、私は英語教師として、英語を学ぶ楽しさについてお話したいと思います。英語を母国語としている主な国は、アメリカ、イギリス、カナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランド、インド、シンガポール、南アフリカ共和国なのですが、世界人口に占める比率は4.68％で、第1位の中国語（13.22％）と比べるとかなり低いです。しかし、公用語人口としては英語が世界一で、意思の疎通が可能な国や地域を考慮すると、英語は世界で最も広く通用する言語と考えられています。約80ヵ国で話され、話者総数は5億1,000万人だそうです。また、世界中で10億人の人々がパソコンを持ち、20億人の人々がインターネットに接続していると言われます。そして、インターネット空間の情報はその7割以上が英語で占められています。人口の多い中国語も1割を超えていますが、最新の情報にアクセスするには英語が不可欠です。インターネットは国境をなくし、同時に言葉の壁もどんどん低くなっています。

また、日本企業の中には海外での事業展開を活発に推進している楽天やユニクロで有名なファーストリテイリングでも社内の公用語を日本語ではなく英語にしている企業があり、これら企業では英語が出来ないと海外勤務に出してもらえなかったり、またソニーなどの企業では、英語ができないと昇進できないそうです。将来的に世界を舞台に活躍することを目指している皆さんにとって、中学・高校の6年間に英語の学習、とくに文法や文章構造をしっかり学んでおくのは英語的な発想を学ぶ上でとても重要です。授業では学年が上がるにつれて英語力の基礎から応用まで段階を踏んだ指導が行われていきますので、地道にコツコツと力を積み上げて行きましょう。

今年度の英語科の主な行事としては、まず全国英語教育研究団体連合会(全英連)が主催する第50回全国高等学校生徒英作文コンテストへの参加があります。これは高校生のみが対象で、昨年の高校1年生のお題は”My Eco-Life(私のエコ生活)”、 高校2・3年生のお題は”A Letter to Myself in the Future(未来の自分への手紙)”でした。全国から寄せられた多数の応募作品の中で、本校から一人の生徒が入選を果たしました。今年度のお題が既に発表になっています。高校1年生は”The Words That Have Encouraged Me Most(私が最も勇気づけられた言葉)”を500語で、高校2・3年生は”The World of the Internet(インターネットの世界)”について600語で書いてもらうことになります。お題が既に発表されているので、どんなことを書いたらよいか早めに英作文の構成を練ってみて下さい。

また、もう一つの主な行事は12月に全校で予定されている中学生のレシテーション・コンテストと高校生のスピーチ・コンテストです。中学生のレシテーション・コンテストというのは英語暗証大会で、一定の長さの英文を暗記して皆の前で発表することです。学年が上がるにつれて暗唱する英文が長くなっていきますが、模範となるネイティブの人が吹き込んだテープを何度も聞いて、正確な発音・アクセント・イントネーションで暗唱できるように何度も練習して下さい。また、高校生のスピーチ・コンテストに関しては、先ほど述べた英作文コンテストのようにお題が限定的ではなく、興味関心のある事、最近の出来事、尊敬する人物など、かなり幅広いお題について5分程度のスピーチをしてもらいます。スピーチに関しては、とにかく内容が重視されるので、今までに身に着けた知識や経験に基づいて、自分の意見や感想を大いに盛り込み、将来への夢につながるような、強い説得力があって、聞いている人たちを共感させるようなスピーチを目指して下さい。12月のコンテストで本校の代表者に選ばれた人は、来年初めに開催される中央大学付属4校主催のコンテストへの出場権を獲得します。

5分間のスピーチというと短いようですが、結構長く感じると思います。そこで、英語で5分間のスピーチの一例として今から私が”English as My Life Work”という題でスピーチをしてみますので参考までに聞いて下さい。

English as My Life Work

When I was a junior high school student, I started studying English.  I was very impressed with the way my English teacher taught the subject and I was attracted by the uniqueness of English pronunciation, accent, intonation, and so on.  Even when I was at junior high school, I hoped to do a certain job by using English in the future.  So I tried to study English very hard for university entrance examinations.  I majored in English literature at Waseda University and at the same time I took a teacher-training course, because I liked to teach English to junior and senior high school students while being a university student.  After graduating from the university, I worked as an English teacher for two years, and then I decided to study in the United States to brush up English ability and applied for some American graduate schools.  Luckily I had two relatives in the State of Massachusettes: one is my uncle who worked as an associate professor at Harvard Dental School and my aunt who married to an American man.  So I decided to attend the graduate school at Boston University, majoring in international relations, and I got a Master’s degree one and a half years later.  As there was a huge amount of reading assignments to prepare for each lesson and it was very hard for me to finish writing the Master’s thesis, I spent most of time in the library.  After coming back to Japan, I wanted to utilize my knowledge in the field of international relations, so I started working in the research section of a U.S. affiliated securities company.  My job description was mainly to translate newspaper and magazine articles related with Japanese, American, and European economics, financial markets including both stock and bond markets, from Japanese into English and vise versa.  Also I translated various reports written by in-house economists, analysts, and strategists.  Although the work was very challenging, I enjoyed working in this kind of environment for about 20 years.  At the same time, I had passed the national exam for professional interpreter tour-guides for foreign visitors, and so I worked as an interpreter-guide at Hato Bus Company only once a week for about two years.  I had a wonderful time in explaining various sight-seeing spots in Tokyo to many foreign tourists, such as Tokyo Tower, the Imperial Palace, Asakusa Sensouji Temple, Meiji Shrine, National Diet Building, the Sumida River Cruise, Chinzan-sou in Bunkyo Ward, and Tea Ceremony at Happoen Garden in Minato Ward, and the Tokyo Disneyland.  Although I worked only once a week as an interpreter-guide, I went up to the observatory terrace of Tokyo Tower at least fifty times.  I was happy to be able to communicate with a lot of people from various countries at that time.  I was also very delighted that some of the tourists sent me thank-you letters after they went back to their home countries.  I still keep some of the group pictures taken while working as an interpreter-guide.  Unlike that time, currently, due to the strong yen and unstable environmental issue surrounding Fukushima nuclear power plants, the number of foreign visitors has been decreasing drastically.  I hope the number of foreign tourists will increase in the near future and they will appreciate the natural beauty of Japanese sightseeing spots.

After quitting the aforementioned U.S. securities company, I have been working as an English teacher for junior and senior high school students.  It is very challenging but worthwhile to motivate all the students to study English harder.  As I like English, I have been using English as a working tool for about 30 years and I am grateful for having studied English, I am sure all the students will benefit from studying it.  In addition, by studying English and communicating with a lot of people from various countries, your point of view will be widened greatly in the future.  I hope all of you will have a bright future by working on the world stage.　Thank you very much for listening.

最後になりますが、グローバル時代を生き抜くためには、英語力以前に必要な資質や素養があります。それは、新しい環境に適応して生活することができるように、ストレスに強い丈夫な体を持つこと。そのためには、しっかり食べ、たくさん体を動かして、ぐっすり眠る。この基本的な生活習慣こそ、丈夫な体を作る大前提です。どんな状況でも自分を否定しない、ポジティブな考え方、楽観的な考え方は国際人になる大きな要素です。

私が皆の年齢の時に、「何のために勉強するのか？」という問に対して漠然と「自分のため」、「親を喜ばせるため」というような考えを持っていました。ですが、最近読んだ哲学の本で、全ての女性が一番求めるものは「自分の意志を持つこと」と書いてありました。つまり、「自分で生きる→自分のために生きる→自分を大事にして生きる」ということが大切なのです。そこで、今この年齢になって思うのは、勉強するのは「生き方を選ぶ自由を得るため」ではないかと思います。自分の幸福の条件を才能や運に委ねるのではなく、自分でよくつかみ直すこと、言い換えれば、自分で自分の「自由の条件」を考え、作り直すということです。皆さん全員が明るい未来を持つために日々の勉強に真剣に取り組んでいただきたいと考えています。ご静聴ありがとうございました。
